Marian LunsonMARIAN has been enjoying the challenges and pleasures of gardening and designing since 1958, in Maryland, Florida and Texas. She is an NGC accredited Master Flower Show Judge. Marian moved to Miami, Florida in 1965 and joined the Dig and Dream Garden Club. In this energetic and enthusiastic group, 12 of the 15 members attended Flower Show School and became flower show judges ! That has to be something of a record ! Marian served for many years on the Board of the Metropolitan Miami Flower Show. She served as President of the Council of Garden Club Presidents when they sponsored the first bilingual Flower Show at Fairchild Gardens in Miami. During her program, Marian shared her foolproof method for "Skeletonizing" prickly pear cactus, as seen in one of the designs shown here. Place the cactus in a black cast iron skillet with 1 tablespoon of lye with water, and boil for a few minutes. Use a dull kitchen knife to scrape away the substance of the cactus, leaving the "skeletonized" base. Do this on top of a stack of newspaper. Voila! A dramatic and unusual design component! In 1975, Marian returned to West Texas, and spent 18 years driving 100 miles each way to attend a Federated Garden Club in Midland, Texas. She has given design programs throughout the state, and she represented Texas Garden Clubs at the "Discovery" exhibit at the Botanic Gardens in Washington, D.C. in 1992. |
